This
web site has been prepared by HEARING ACCESS, a volunteer committee
dedicated to promoting improved access for hearing-impaired persons.
This is a program that has as its objectives:
1) Accessibility for deaf and hard-of-hearing people in public facilities and service industries, and
2) Making the International Symbol of Access for Hearing Impairment (shown above) as familiar as the wheelchair access symbol.
It involves an organized program in training and education toincrease sensitivity
to the needs of persons with hearing impairment plus the use of different
types of technical devices in order to ensure that various environments will
be accessible.
This committee has chosen to emphasize the following areas in their focus plan
1. Health related facilities to include hospitals and nursing homes
2.- Emergency services such as ambulance, police and fire departments
3. Public gathering places: e.g. churches, theaters, etc.
4. Businesses
5. Government agencies
Our initial mission is to provide materials for agencies that may deal with hearing
impaired persons that may be used for educating staff in the communication
skills appropriate to making themselves clearly understood by hearing
impaired persons.
